NWCC is a member of both the British Caving Association and the British Cave Research Association (BCRA).
BCRA's object is to promote the study of caves and associated phenomena. It attains this object by supporting cave & karst research; by encouraging original exploration (both in the UK and on expeditions overseas); by collecting and publishing speleological information; maintaining a library; and organising educational and scientific conferences and meetings.
NWCC plays an active part in these activities with a particular emphasis on exploration. All new discoveries are carefully documented and published in our regular newsletter. NWCC works closely with other bodies (e.g. Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales, formerly CCW and Environment Agency Wales) to study, record and protect caves for future generations whilst also promoting responsible access. Caves enjoying statutory protection within Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) include Ogof Hesp Alyn, Ogof Hen Ffynhonau and Ogof Nadolig (in the Alyn Gorge SSSI), and Ogof Dydd Byraf, Ogof Llyn Ddu, Ogof Llyn Parc and Ogof Cefn-y-gist (in the Minera Mountain SSSI).
